JC Intal, the former Ateneo Blue Eagle, is stepping up for Barangay Ginebra in the ongoing KFC-PBA Philippine Cup.

Getting extra minutes on the floor following the absence of key players, Intal has averaged 19.5 points in the last four matches. He also contributes 7.25 rebounds, three assists, 2.25 steals and one shot block in 30.5 minutes.

With Jayjay Helterbrand on the injury list and Mark Caguioa still trying to get back into shape, Intal has given the team the much-needed firepower.

“He’s taking advantage of the opportunity,” Ginebra coach Jong Uichico said yesterday, a day after the Kings downed Burger King, 122-104. “I really don’t have anything to do with it, it’s just him. He’s been working hard.”

“He has the potential, the skills and the talent. What he needs is maturity. But he’s already there, I hope he’ll continue working hard,” added Uichico.

Against Burger King, Intal, nicknamed the “Rocket” because of his explosive moves to the basket, scored a career-best 24 points to go with his five rebounds, the same number of assists, three steals and a shot block in 31 minutes of action.

In his first 14 games with Ginebra this conference, Intal averaged only 7.9 points, 4 boards, 1.1 assists, 0.6 steal and 0.4 blocks.

The win gave Ginebra an automatic spot in the quarterfinals.

The Kings still have a legit shot at the last outright slot in the Final Four via playoff in the event Alaska drops its last two games toBurger King tomorrow and to Rain or Shine on Friday.
